The
Daughters of Mary Help of Christians commonly known as Salesian Sisters of Don
Bosco was founded by St. John Bosco and by St. Mary Domenica Mazzarello, the
co-foundress on 5 August 1872 in Italy. There are 15,300 salesian sisters
working in 89 countries in five continents of the Globe. The sisters came to
India in 1922.
In 1992 Salesian sisters commenced to work for the first
time in Malankara diocese, namely Tiruvalla. The very first house was opened at
Kottayam - puthupally and the first Superior of the house is Sr. Rose Thomas. It
was followed by Sr. Elizabeth George, Sr. Philo Fernandez, and Sr. Cecily Paul.
The present Superior is Sr. Rosa E.J.
The second house in the diocese
was opened in 1997 at Kattappana which is a fertile land of numerous activities.
The following are the Superiors who led the work; Sr. Rosy Lopez, Sr. Rosamma
Thonippara, and Sr. Mercy Ittoop. Sr. Rosa Challamkathil now holds the
reins.
